Pregnancy Related Hip Problems

Hip conditions occurring during or after pregnancy

Several hip conditions can occur in association with pregnancy:

Transient Osteoporosis / Bone Marrow Edema Syndrome

A self-limiting condition causing hip pain and reduced bone density, typically resolving after delivery. See the Bone Marrow Edema Syndrome page for further detail.

Avascular Necrosis

Pregnancy is a recognised risk factor for AVN of the femoral head. See the Avascular Necrosis page for further detail.

Low Energy Femoral Neck Fractures

Can rarely occur during pregnancy, often associated with underlying osteoporosis. The usual treatment with surgical fixation must take the effects of anaesthesia and surgical stress on fetal health into careful consideration.
